Football/League One – Wayne Rooney, to England’s third tier

The Derby County boss was unable to avoid relegation to League One after the defeat to QPR. The British side were narrowly beaten and will not be in the Championship next season.

Derby County boss Wayne Rooney was unable to avoid disaster. The British team lost 1-0 away to Queens Park Rangers with a goal from Amos and confirmed what was an open secret : next season they will be playing in League One.

The Englishman, who took the reins at the start of 2021 after a brief spell as caretaker manager, has failed to meet his targets and the club will be relegated at the end of the season. He could be joined by Barnsley and Peterborough United, who occupy the remaining places.

The former Manchester United player has managed a total of 70 games with a record of 21 wins, 17 draws and 23 defeats, an average of 1.14 points per game. His contract expires on June 30th, 2023 and all indications are that he will stay on.

Rooney is completing his second season on the Derby County bench in what is his first experience in charge as a manager. In 2020/21 he managed to save the division with a 21st place finish one point above relegation.

The former Red Devils captain is not getting the expected results as a manager. His legend as a player backs him up: he won five Premier Leagues and one Champions League in 559 games for United, scoring 253 goals and providing 146 assists.
