Tennis/Australia Open – Dimitrov defeats Thiem, Williams is back

In full confidence since the beginning of the week, Grigor Dimitrov has beaten Dominic Thiem without losing more than 8 games. As for Serena Williams, she is qualified for the quarter-finals, whereas she has not won a Grand Slam since the AO 2017.

After winning against Cilic and Bolt, Dimitrov had profited from the abandon of Carreno-Busta. The ex-number 3 ATP continue his way in defeating Dominic Thiem, one of the favourites for the title. Grigor Dimitrov mastered the game who let only 8 games at his opponent. The score shows the supremacy of the Bulgarian player during the whole match: 6/4 6/4 6/0. Dominic Thiem was maybe tired after his match against Kyrgios on the previous round but Dimitrov has shown a lot of qualities and he deserves his qualification. It is the 3rd win in a row for Dimitrov against Thiem.

Williams is back

The age gap between Williams and Sabalenka was not seen on the court last night because the difference in level was so small. After 3 tight sets between Williams, 39 years old, and Sabalenka, 22 years old, the more experienced of the two won. Maybe the key was that “SW” was better in decisive moments. Serena Williams is on her road to win her 24th Grand Slam after 4 years without winning one. Before that, she will need to beat Simona Halep for her 54th quarter-final in Grand Slam.

On the other match of the day, Aslan Karatsev created the surprise by winning against Auger-Aliassime. The Russian will play against Dimitrov in quarter-finals after passing by the qualifications to have his place in the tournament. Naomie Osaka and Simona Halep have also won their match with some difficulties. Both players won in three sets and join Williams and Hsieh in the quarter-final.
